Barbara D’Angelo Månsson
A self-taught Italian/Swedish contemporary artist has a unique journey intertwining her passion for art and a career in science. Born and raised in Italy, she took her first artistic steps focusing on drawing with charcoal, ink, and chalk, alongside exploring photography with a Polaroid and a LoMo camera.
In 2011, her path led her to Sweden, where she pursued a scientific career at the University of Gothenburg. Here, she was captivated by the Nordic art scene, leading her to experiment with painting, especially abstract subjects. Her scientific journey took another turn in 2015 when she moved to the United States for an Assistant Professor position at Temple University in Philadelphia. The American art scene deeply inspired her, enriching her painting style and allowing her to express her life experiences abroad on canvas.
Returning to Sweden in 2017, she continued to evolve artistically, embracing new techniques and materials. Her approach to art is heavily influenced by her scientific background, characterized by a continuous process of experimentation.
Her artworks reflect an abstract interpretation of her daily life in Sweden, significantly shaped by her Italian roots and her experiences in the USA. She primarily uses acrylics, skillfully blending various techniques and materials like impasto and sand to create textured, layered artworks. Her process often culminates with the addition of chalk or oil pastels, bringing a dynamic vibrancy to her pieces.
She has participated in numerous group exhibitions and art fairs across Europe and the USA, showcasing her art that embodies a unique fusion of her diverse cultural experiences and scientific mindset. Her works stand as a colorful journey through unconventional combinations of shapes, textures, and subjects, capturing the essence of her multifaceted life.
